Break-back trap

This crossbow-actioned trap is used for sable and other mustelids. The T-shaped part holding the place of the quarrel in a proper crossbow is propelled to fall down like a guillotine when the animal passing through the trap releases the catch. The trap is shown in uncocked position, with the mobile T-shaped hammer resting on the fixed jaw. The catch of the bowstring is shaped like a bird and is reminiscent of some hunting spirit figurations. Wood, leather. 52,6 x 60,3 cm Collection Joseph Martin, Stanovoi Mountains, 1882-1886 MusČe d'Ethnographie de Bordeaux 2 900.28.29
